Steel fabrication in West Wales: what it covers and how to compare quotes

MGC West Wales designs, fabricates and erects structural steelwork from our base in Aberaeron, Ceredigion. If you are adding an extension, opening up rooms with steel beams, building a new-frame home, or need commercial or agricultural steelwork, a single design-and-build team keeps drawing, fabrication and installation under one point of contact.

The process

What does a steel fabrication company do?

Fabrication is the link between the engineer’s calculation and a beam that actually fits the opening.

Marking out

From structural engineer drawings so every beam, column and frame is cut to the right length and hole positions.

Sawing and shearing

To length, with notched or cope-cut ends where steel sits into walls or onto other members.

Drilling and punching

Bolt holes, slots and fixture points to the project’s connection detail.

Welding and finishing

MIG, TIG or stick welding plus shot-blasting, galvanising or intumescent paint for fire-rated members.

Trial assembly

Complex frames are trial-fitted in the yard so site fitting is faster and more accurate.

Delivery and erection

On site with suitable lifting, temporary propping, levelling and grouting.

Fabrication is not just cutting and welding. It is the link between the engineer’s calculation and a beam that actually fits the opening.

Applications

What is steel fabrication used for in West Wales?

The jobs we fabricate steel for fall into a few clear groups.

We work across Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, and travel into South Wales for larger or linked projects. Being based in Aberaeron means site visits in Cardigan, Lampeter, Haverfordwest and Llanelli are practical decisions, not a day trip from Cardiff.

Domestic steelwork

  • Extensions

Steel beams to open up rear or side walls, knock-throughs, and ridge/floor beams for wrap-around builds.

  • Loft conversions

Ridge beams, floor joists, dormer frames and steel stair stringers.

  • Internal remodelling

Removing chimney breasts or load-bearing walls with correctly sized goal-post frames.

  • New-build houses

Light steel or hybrid frames where the design calls for it.

Agricultural and commercial steelwork

  • Portal frames, machine sheds and barn extensions.
  • Mezzanine floors and staircases for workshops and retail units.
  • Canopies, gates, railings and small bridges.

How to compare quotes for structural steel

The cheapest line on a quote is rarely the cheapest job once extras, crane hire and site delays are added.

What is included: detailing, fabrication, delivery, off-loading, erection, temporary works, and final grouting.

Steel grade and origin: S275 or S355 are common structural grades. Ask for mill certificates if traceability matters.

Finish specification: bare steel, shot-blasted and primed, hot-dip galvanised, or intumescent fire coating.

Tolerances: length, squareness, hole pitch and twist should match the project specification.

Connections: bolted site joints, welded end plates, or a mix. Changes after approval are where variations creep in.

Access and lifting: narrow lanes, tight sites and poor ground can affect crane size and cost.

Send this for an accurate, fixed quote

  1. Architectural plans showing openings and beam positions.
  2. Structural engineer’s calculations and sketch details.
  3. Site photos and access notes (lane width, parking, overhead lines).
  4. Your preferred programme so we can schedule shop time and erection.

If you only have drawings for an extension, that is enough to start. We can review the steel schedule and flag anything that looks over- or under-specified before we quote.

Assurance

Quality, tolerances and standards

Good steelwork is measured twice: once in the shop and once on site.

Material

Sections are checked against mill certificates so the grade and origin are known.

Cutting and drilling

Dimensions and hole positions are checked against the fabrication drawing before leaving the yard.

Welding

Procedures and welder qualifications are matched to the specification and steel grade.

Visual inspection

Weld profiles, surface preparation and coating thickness are checked before despatch.

Dimensional checks

Plumb, level, twist and bolt tightness are recorded on erection before handover.

Structural steelwork in the UK is covered by British and European standards for execution, tolerances and welding procedure. We work to the project specification and the relevant standards for the steel grade and finish chosen.

FAQ

Steel fabrication FAQ

Straight answers to the questions people ask when they are scoping a steel fabrication job in West Wales.

A steel fabrication company cuts, drills, bends and welds raw steel sections into the finished beams, columns and frames a building needs. It then delivers and erects those members on site, working from structural engineer drawings.
